Lucknow : Reacting sharply to Rahul Gandhi’s unscheduled visit to Lakhimpur Kheri to meet the family of a girl who was allegedly raped and murdered, Uttar Pradesh’s ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Wednesday flayed the Congress scion for his “double standards”.
“If Rahul Gandhi was really so concerned about the well-being of women, then why has he not cared to pay a visit to the two women who were raped in Delhi’s Kalkaji and Dwarka localities or the more recent rape of a woman in a police station in Haryana,” a BSP spokesman asked.
“Rahul’s action has clearly demonstrated how his intention was to only target a non-Congress ruled state, and blatantly overlook similar crimes against women in Congress-ruled Delhi and Haryana.
“It appears that Haryana and Delhi were far away from Rahul’s residence,” he quipped.
Accusing Rahul of “playing politics in view of the state assembly elections in sight”, the spokesman added: “We are confident that Rahul Gandhi will not be seen in the state once elections are over.”
Gandhi, known for his unscheduled outings, took the state government by surprise by visiting Lakhimpur Kheri after curtailing a tour of his parliamentary constituency Amethi, where he arrived earlier Wednesday.
“They (victim’s family members) need justice…They want to know all what took place here…they believe they will not get justice and therefore they are demanding a CBI probe into the case,” Gandhi told reporters.
The body of the 14-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree June 10 inside the Nighasan police station premises in Lakhimpur Kheri district.
