Funeral home attacked with fire bombs in Mexico

By IANS/EFE,

Ciudad Juarez (Mexico) : A funeral home in Mexico’s Ciudad Juarez city was attacked with fire bombs and gunfire while relatives and friends mourned a man killed several days ago, police said.

The attack occurred around 5 p.m. Monday in a neighbourhood in the southern section of Juarez, located across the border from El Paso, Texas.

The assailants opened fire from an automobile and threw Molotov cocktails at the funeral home, which caught fire, a Chihuahua state Attorney General’s Office spokesman said.

The dead man’s body was completely burned, but all the mourners managed to get out of the funeral home unscathed.

Ciudad Juarez has been plagued by drug-related violence for years.

More than 3,100 people were murdered in the border city last year, making 2010 the worst year since a war between rival drug gangs sent the homicide rate skyrocketing in 2008.

The killing has not slowed this year, with about 400 people murdered in Juarez, the state AG’s office said.
