Delhi priest held for kidnapping, five minors rescued

New Delhi: A 50-year-old priest was arrested in the national capital for kidnapping five children in the last one year, police said Friday. The children have been rescued.

Prem Dass, a priest at a temple at Fatehpur Beri in south Delhi, was apprehended Thursday.

His latest crime, kidnapping a 13-year-old boy from Uttar Pradesh, led to his arrest.

Deepak was kidnapped from outside his school in Parasrampur area in Ayodhya March 1.

“The child left for the school as usual and on his way Dass intercepted him on the pretext of seeking help to lift his luggage. Dass showed him a picture of Delhi and lured him for better education and asked him to join,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police H.G.S. Dhaliwal.

“Dass brought him to Delhi and gave him food and water. Deepak noticed four other children in the premises. He sensed trouble, and secretly made a telephone call to his father Lallan Prasad,” added Dhaliwal.

Lallan came to Delhi and contacted the police. Police checked the number from which the call was made and registered a case at Fatehpur Beri.

Police raided Dass’s premises and rescued five boys — Deepak, Swas, 12, Raghunandan, 12, Shiv Shankar, 15 and Manohar 13.

Dass hails from Bhagalpur in Bihar and has been running the temple since 1988. All the four minors, residents of Bihar, were brought to Delhi last year.
