Cairo: Egypt’s deposed president Hosni Mubarak and his family’s assets in all Egyptian banks will be investigated, the Court of Appeals has ruled.
The court will Tuesday consider a request from the justice ministry’s department of illegal earnings to determine whether enough evidence is available to allow the disclosure of secret accounts belonging to the Mubarak family, Egyptian daily Al-Masry-al-Youm reported, citing the head of the court Abdul Aziz Omar as saying Monday.
Activists previously filed a complaint to prosecutors claiming that Mubarak, his wife and two sons possessed secret bank accounts.
The activists said the disclosure of these accounts was essential to hold the family accountable for potential graft charges.
Egypt’s attorney general Abdel Meguid Mahmoud Monday ordered freezing of Mubarak’s assets abroad and banned him and his family from leaving the country.
The Mubarak family is believed to have amassed a vast fortune worth as much as 70 billion euros, according to Arabic media reports.
Mubarak was forced to step down Feb 11 in the face of massive protests against his 30-year rule. He now lives in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Shiekh.
