PDP to hold first major public meet in Jammu

By IANS,

Jammu : In what is seen as a major development, the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is all set to hold Sunday its first major public meeting in Jammu in four years.

The party, which had angered the people in Jammu by its rigid stand on the Amarnath shrine land row, is now competing for political space in the region with vengeance.

The PDP had opposed allotment of land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board and had withdrawn support to the Congress, resulting in the fall of their coalition government in 2008.

The party is holding the meeting at Parade Ground in Jammu city, the venue where only the prime ministers and major political leaders have held public rallies so far.

“We are confident that the party would be able to mobilise people in large numbers to hear our leaders, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti,” said party leader Falail Singh, who is one of the organisers of the rally.

The rally would be similar to the one it organised in Srinagar last month.

“The idea is to tell the people here that the party is for equal stake of Jammu in the resolution of Jammu and Kashmir issue,” he added.

According to the PDP’s idea of self-rule, people would be empowered at regional and sub-regional level. This formula draws elements from the four-point formula of former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf, seeking its application in all regions of the state, including those in Pakistan’s control.
