Berlin: German Defense Minister, Thomas de Maziere, stressed there was no need for a NATO military intervention in Libya amid the escalating conflict in the North African country, media reports said on Friday.
Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels,
the minister made clear that the situation in Libya did not warrant a military
intervention by the western military alliance.
De Maziere warned NATO member states against being dragged into a war
with Libya.
Unlike France and Britain, Germany has been very sceptical over a possible
western military action to oust Libyan dictator Moammar Qadhafi.
Germany fears that such a military operation could have uncontrollable
repercussions not only for Libya but for the whole volatile North
African region.
In other related news, European Union leaders met also in Brussels on
Friday for an emergency summit which was expected to demand the
Qadhafi’s departure.
According to a draft of the EU final declaration, the 27 leaders of the bloc
are to demand that Qaddafi relinquish power immediately.
