UP Govt to start PG course in Unani medicine

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government will soon start post graduate course in Unani medicine. The facility will be offered at the two existing Unani medical colleges of the state. The announcement was made by minister of medical education Lalji Verma during a seminar on the relevance of Unani stream of treatment organised by state Takmil-ut-Tib Unani College at Bali auditorium in Lucknow.

“Unani stream of treatment offers cure to chronic diseases. It is cheap and with no side effects. We need to promote this alternative stream of treatment for the welfare of the society,” said Verma. Regarding the PG seats in Unani stream, Verma stated that soon PG course will be introduced in the state owned Unani medical colleges. Presently there are two Unani medical colleges one each at Lucknow and Allahabad. “The introduction of PG seats will also encourage research work in the Unani stream. Besides producing experts in the Unani stream new research work will give cure to the people from their ailments,” he said.

The minister also assured that the vacant seats of faculty members in the state’s Unani medical colleges will be soon filled. “The college should give a proposal in this regard and prompt action will be taken by the state government,” he said.

Earlier, during the scientific session Unani experts presented their papers on the treatment of chronic and other diseases. In his paper on cardio-protective drugs, Dr HH Siddiqui of Integral University listed several Unani drugs which are helpful in prevention of cardiac diseases. Another Dr Akhtar Siddiqui of Hamdard University delivered a lecture on the usage of Unani drugs derived from Indian spices for tackling Diabetes-type 2.

Organising Secretary Dr Khalid Ansari informed that the seminar will conclude on Sunday amidst the presence of cabinet minister Swami Prasad Maurya.
