Jodhpur pregnancy death toll reaches 17

By IANS,

Jodhpur: One more woman who had delivered a child at the government-run Umaid Hospital here died of excessive bleeding Monday, taking the pregnancy related deaths in the hospital to 17 since February.

The women died after they were allegedly administered contaminated IV fluids. Hospital-generated infection is also being probed as possible cause of these deaths.

Sagar Kanwar (25) was admitted to the Umaid Hospital Feb 20. She delivered a child the following day. But she was referred to Mahatama Gandhi Hospital here after excessive bleeding.

“She was on ventilator since then, but died Monday. An enquiry has been ordered into her death,” a hospital official said.

A four-member team of doctors from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh has arrived in Jodhpur to probe the deaths.

“The team will investigate the cause of deaths – whether it was
contaminated IV fluids or hospital-generated infection or both,” said an officer.

The Umaid Hospital administration had lodged a first information report against the Indore-based firm which manufactured the fluids, following which its quality control manager Sanjay Shah was arrested.

However, the autopsy report of one of the women March 10 said infection was the cause of her death.
