IAS officer painted black over ‘misconduct’

By IANS,

Aurangabad (Maharashtra) : An Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer was attacked here by a political party’s workers, who painted his face black, after a woman employee alleged that he passed obscene comments on her and other fellow women colleagues. Five of the attackers have been arrested.

Following allegations by the woman employee at Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Friday, several Republican Party of India (RPI) workers attacked Municipal Commissioner Purushottam Bhapkar, shouting slogans against him.

“Bhapkar has been making several obscene comments on women staffers of the corporation. He would call them to his office and ask offending questions,” AMC’s legal advisor Aparna Thete said.

“I will take this up with the women’s cell and register a complaint,” she added.

Bhapkar rubbished the allegations.

“She is getting back at me for taking her to task on several occasions of official misconduct,” he said.

“I have sought answers from her on several legal matters pending with her since a long time. Instead of getting her work right, she is accusing me of moral misconduct,” he added.

Bhapkar said that although the attack by the RPI workers did not seem to be connected with the case of Thete, there is an internal connection.

“RPI workers attacked me because I did not allow several employees of the engineering department to bow down to their extortion demands,” Bhapkar said.

“Thete, however, shook hands with these party workers and instigated the attack on me,” he charged.

Aurangabad police arrested five workers of the RPI for rioting and using criminal force against a government official.
