New Delhi : Environmental NGO Greenpeace Friday welcomed the Chinese state council’s decision to suspend the approval process of its upcoming nuclear plants until their safety standards are revised.
“We welcome the decisive statement and China’s cautious attitude towards nuclear power at a critical moment,” the NGO said in a statement.
The decision comes days after a devastating earthquake and Tsunami hit japan, causing radiation leaks in its nuclear plants.
“China’s recent announcement goes to show that nations are beginning to understand the risk involved with nuclear technology,” the statement said.
While Germany was the first country to announce a three-month review of its nuclear plants, Sweden was the second in line to suspend its approval process for three of its planned nuclear plants.
“The radioactive leakage in Japan is a loud and clear warning for India who plans to build an untested reactor in a high seismic zone. India must reconsider its nuclear ambition, considering that the Jaitapur nuclear power plant is located on a zone 4, with zone 5 being the highest area,” Greenpeace India nuclear and energy campaigner Karuna Raina said in the statement.
“The region has faced 92 earthquakes since 1985.
“Nuclear power is one of the most unwise solutions for the energy problem due to its enormous investment costs, long construction period, and above all, serious safety concerns. India requires energy to power its development, but that energy demand must be built on a sustainable and safe foundation,” added Raina.
