Karunanidhi flays poll panel

By IANS,

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi Tuesday came down heavily on the Election Commission for transferring officials and checking vehicles for unaccounted cash.

In a statement issued here, Karunanidhi, the DMK president, said the Election Commission has transferred senior officials in large numbers in an unprecedented manner based on complaints from the AIADMK.

The poll panel had Saturday ordered transfers of the district collectors of Madurai, Vellore, Theni and Erode.

The panel has also ordered transfer of the inspector general of police for south Tamil Nadu, the deputy inspector general of Dindigul, commissioners of police of Madurai and Chennai suburban and superintendents of police of Madurai and Thiruvanamallai districts.

Karunanidhi complained that the Election Commission did not consult the state government on the transfers.

He said that the commission’s checking of vehicles and seizing of cash has crippled trade, while no politician has been caught carrying unaccounted money.
