New Delhi : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh reiterated Wednesday that no bribes were paid to anyone to win the 2008 trust vote in parliament.
Responding to opposition allegations, the prime minister told the Lok Sabha that there was “no conclusive evidence” of the bribery allegations and the government had not authorised anyone to buy MPs.
He denied charges by opposition leaders that a parliamentary committee that probed the alleged bribery in July 2008 had concluded that bribes had been given and suggested further investigation.
Manmohan Singh said it was “dangerous” to rely upon so-called embassy cables.
His reference was to a US embassy cable leaked by WikiLeaks that suggested that money was paid to MPs to win a trust vote triggered by the India-US civil nuclear deal.
The prime minister also took a dig at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani and said he (Advani) had not “forgiven” him for losing the 2004 Lok Sabha election.
