Police observers for Bengal polls: Quraishi

By IANS,

Kolkata: Thirteen police officers will be deployed as observers in sensitive areas during the West Bengal polls, said Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) S.Y. Quraishi Wednesday.

“This time we have decided to deploy police observers apart form general observers in the sensitive areas to handle the law and order situation during the assembly polls,” said Quraishi in a press conference here.

“The police observers will be senior officers with or above the rank of deputy inspector general (DIG) posted in other states,” he said.

He said the police observers will be deployed in 12 south West Bengal districts, except Kolkata, and in Darjeeling.

Beside police observers, there will be a 181-strong team of general observers who will oversee the six-phase polling in the state beginning April 18.
