Guwahati: The National membership drive of Khudai Khidmatgar was launched in Guwahati on 24th March when more than 70 persons mostly youths at a program at Assam Tourist Lodge here became members of Khudai Khidmatgar and took the oath of changing the world through the practice of non-violence.
The membership drive meeting was attended by about 80 participants comprising journalists, advocates, social activists and students. Speaking on the occasion, Faisal Khan, the prime campaigner of the drive said, ‘the existence of widespread violence has changed our everyday conversation. People talk and support violence and militarization and the need of the hour is the practice of nonviolence.’ He also added that Gandhi is father of the nation and his teachings are followed all over the world, then why we don’t practice and popularize keeping in mind the present scenario of our society?’
Faisal Khan said that the drive has grown lots of enthusiasm among the masses and people from all over the country are welcoming the move. The drive will continue and the next drive is scheduled in Kolkata on March 26th. ‘The drive will promote secularism and peace. Khudai Kidmatghars will devote a day in a month in volunteering for a noble cause. It will not be like other NGOs and will not work on sponsored projects’, said Faisal Khan.
Daiyan Hussain, social activist, and Suresh Bhai from UP also spoke on the occasion highlighting the aims and objectives of the drive. Ms Biju Borbaruah, Gandhian of Assam and Moni Mala, another noted Gandhian distributed the certificate of membership among the participants.
This is the second drive campaign in North East India. The first one was held in Imphal on 23rd march 2011 where membership drive started by Irom Sharmila who has been fasting for last ten years for repealing AFSPA.
