Gujarat beefs up Sanjiv Bhatt’s security

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has enhanced the security cover of Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Sanjiv Bhatt, who recently claimed that Chief Minister Narendra Modi had allowed the killing of Muslims in the Godhra communal riots of 2002, police said Tuesday.

Gujarat Director General of Police (DGP) Chittaranjan Singh said that a security guard will be present at his home for the family in case Bhatt goes out with the security person already allotted to him.

Bhatt will May 9 appear before the Nanavati-Mehta judicial enquiry commission probing the Godhra train carnage and communal riots.

Sanjeev Bhatt, a 1988 cadre IPS officer and the principal of the Reserve Police Training College in Junagadh, had in April filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court, claiming that he was present at an emergency meeting held Feb 27, 2002, to review the law and order situation following the Godhra train carnage, which left 59 people dead and triggered a violence that claimed over 1,200 people.

He claimed in the affidavit that the chief minister had instructed the police authorities to allow Hindus to vent their anger against the Muslims.
