Balakrishnan refutes graft charges

By IANS,

Kochi : Former chief justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan, facing allegations of corruption after his kin reportedly amassed wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income, said Sunday his family did not own a “single paisa” of black money.

“They do not have a single paisa of black money and I am very sure of that. Just possessing 30 cents of land, is it something wrong,” Balakrishnan asked while speaking to a TV channel here.

He also said he had no problems about giving out details of his wealth as all that he has earned was in his official capacity.

“I don’t have any issue in giving out the details. Some person, I don’t know why he wants such details…but now I think I will have no problem in divulging it,” said Balakrishnan.

Retired Supreme Court judge V.R. Krishna Iyer launched a tirade against Balakrishnan at the end of last year following reports of widespread amassment of wealth by the kith and kin of the latter.

Following Iyer’s outbursts and on account of a complaint to Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan by a Kochi resident, the state government has begun a vigilance probe into the amassing of wealth by Balakrishnan’s son-in-law P.V. Srinijin, a Youth Congress leader who quit the party after the allegations surfaced.
