New Delhi : For the first time in the country, a 100-bed hospital to exclusively deal with Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) casualties is to come up just behind Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi.
In its medical preparedness to meet any CBRN casualties, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has given a nod for setting up of a CBRN hospital in Safdarjung Hospital.
This follows the incident of radioactivity in Mayapuri due to contamination of Cobalt-60 in the metal scrap and death due to radioactive radiation last year.
‘It is for the first time that a hospital dedicated to treat any CBRN casualty is coming up in the country. The Union Health Ministry has accepted the proposal for setting up the hospital in Safdarjung Hospital,’ pti reported quoting Dr N K Mohanty, Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, as said.
Mohanty said this hospital will come up in the newly-acquired land behind Safdarjung Hospital.
‘It will be a 100-bed hospital. During the Mayapuri incident, the need for such a hospital was urgently felt. Once this hospital comes up, we can meet any chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear emergency without any inconvenience to the patients,’ he said.
Mohanty also said the government has also agreed to the setting up of a new emergency department in the hospital.
He said ‘the casualty ward is too small and we have decided to demolish it and set up a new emergency ward so that we can manage the patient load. This too will come up in the newly-acquired land of the hospital.’
