Kanimozhi gets two-day exemption from court appearance

New Delhi: A trial court Tuesday exempt DMK chief M. Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi and mananging director of Kalaignar TV Sharad Kumar, accused in the 2G spectrum allotment case, from personal appearance in court May 12-13.

Special CBI judge O.P. Saini allowed the applications filed by the two, who said they they have been summoned by the Income Tax department in Chennai for questioning on the two days and have to be present there.

A trial court May 7 had rejected the exemption application of Kanimozhi and Kumar for May 9-10.

In their pleas, the DMK parliamentarian and Kumar stated that they wished to visit Chennai in order to meet their auditors to prepare their replies to be filed before the ED.

Kanimozhi appeared in the Patiala House district court May 6 along with Sharad Kumar.

The court had in its order asked her to appear in person before the court everyday till the documents are scrutinised. The court has reserved its order on her bail plea till May 14.

The CBI has chargesheeted Raja, his aide R.K. Chandolia, former telecom secretary Siddhartha Behura and Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Balwa for conspiring to sell valuable 2G spectrum waves to select companies at rock bottom prices.

Later, the probe agency also named Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar as co-conspirator in the case, while Karunanidhi’s wife Dayalu Ammal was listed as a witness.

Cineyug Film’s Karim Morani, another accused, was also granted exemption from personal appearance in court. On May 6, Morani had got exemption as he was admitted to Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital.

Morani will have to appear before the court on May 12.
