Lucknow: A labour died while two others were injured when an under construction roof of a basement collapsed at Haj House in Sarojini Nagar on Sunday. Police has registered a case against the contractor while the State Haj Committee (SHC) washed their hands off the incident.

As per reports, the basement of the Haj House in Sarojini Nagar was constructed in 2009. Presently, a small roof was being added at the entrance so as to prevent rain water from entering the basement. The slab work was complete and the linter was being opened on Sunday when suddenly it caved in with several labours being buried in the debris. Panic gripped as several others present in the compound rushed to rescue the labours. Three labours received injuries and were rushed to the trauma centre of CSM Medical University (CSMMU). During treatment, Anil (20) of Rajajipuram died while two others were discharged. Police officials stated that another labour Chandrashekhar (25) of Kakori is still under treatment at the trauma centre.

Police informed that a case has been registered against the private contractor Mohd. Alam of Madion though he has not been arrested yet.

Meanwhile, OSD of State Haj Committee (SHC) Shahabuddin Mohammad claimed that the work was being done by the private contractor and the committee has no role in the incident. “The construction work is done by the contractor and work is assigned by the construction agency. They are responsible for the quality and safety measure and the SHC has no role or control over the work,” he said. The SHC is headed by senior cabinet minister Naseemuddin Siddiqui.

Meanwhile, SHC is going to organise qurrah (lottery) for selecting the pilgrims for Haj-2011. The draw will be held at Ganna Sansthan from 10:30 am for finalising the names of nearly 32000 pilgrims from UP.
