Jamia graduate is the youngest AIUDF MLA in Assam

Guwahati: He was the youngest candidate of All India United Democratic Front of Badruddin Ajmal for Assam Assembly elections, and now probably he is the youngest of all 28 newly elected Muslim MLAs in the assembly. Yes, Abdur Rahman Ajmal Qasmi, son of AIUDF supremo Badruddin Ajmal, is only 27. He has won Salmara South assembly seat.

Ajmal junior,a graduate of Darul Uloom Deoband, holds Masters in Islamic Studies from Jamia Millia Islamia. He will debut his political career with entry into Assam Assembly. He polled 62254 votes and won the seat by defeating his nearest rival Wazed Ali Choudhury of Congress. Choudhury got 58498 votes. There were four candidates for the seat. Dewan Joynal Abedin of Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) got 1600 votes while Mofidul Hoque of All India Trinamool Congress could get only 794 votes.

In all, 28 Muslim candidates have been elected to the assembly in this poll. Of them, 16 are from AIUDF. In the last assembly there were 25 Muslim MLAs.
