Judges inspect CBI special court hearing 2G scam

New Delhi: Two judges Saturday inspected the special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court at the Patiala House complex where the 2G spectrum scam case is being heard.

During the day, CBI Special Judge Talwant Singh and Additional Session Judge Sanjiv Jain visited the courtroom of Special Judge O.P. Saini while he was not present.

All the accused, their lawyers and media persons were present in courtroom except for Cineyug Films’ Karim Morani, who has got exemption from personal appearance due to his ill health, and Surendar Pipara of Reliance, undergoing treatment for a heart problem in a hospital.

Singh asked the court staff about the problems in the courtroom during the day-to-day proceedings of the 2G case. DB Realty owner Shahid Balwa told the judges that the number of ACs are not enough and there is lot of suffocation in the room.

Balwa said the courtroom is jampacked and is occupied by media persons, due to which their counsel have no space even to stand.

On this, Singh asked the caretaker, who accompanied him to the court premises, to make proper arrangements for the accused, their family members, litigants and media persons.

“See what possible arrangements can be made for lessening of the crowd inside the court. Fix eight mikes in the courtroom so that each and every one present in the courtroom hears the court proceedings,” Singh said.

“Two mikes will be with the judge and while rest will be with lawyers and accused,” he said.

The CBI had named DMK MP Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV chief Sharad Kumar as co-conspirators in its April 25 supplementary charge sheet after it traced an illegal money trail of Rs.214 crore in the scam.

The first charge sheet had named, besides former telecom minister A Raja, former telecom secretary Siddharth Behura, Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Balwa, Raja’s aide R.K. Chandolia, Swan Telecom’s Vinod Goenka and Unitech’s Sanjay Chandra.

The supplementary charge sheet listed Kanimozhi, Sharad Kumar, Cineyug Films’ Karim Morani as well as Asif Balwa and Rajiv B. Aggarwal of Kusegaon Realty. As on Friday, 13 of them are in judicial custody.
