Rae Bareli (Uttar Pradesh): Government vehicles were targeted and public property destroyed as laywers and employees of the state roadways clashed here Monday.
Ten people were injured in the clash that erupted near a bus station in the Kotwali area, following arguments between a group of lawyers and roadways employees, police said.
The verbal duel snowballed into a major issue, when members from both the warring groups resorted to brickbats, clashed with the police, damaged three state-run road transport corporation buses, and also targeted government hoardings and other establishments in the area.
“While the exact reason behind the arguments is yet to be ascertained, it appears that the two groups clashed after some dispute over bus fare,” Additional Superintendent of Police Shaligram told reporters in this town, about 80 km from Lucknow.
“The situation is still tense, but under control. In the wake of the violence, security in the area has been strengthened.”
