Meghalaya mulls cable cars for Shillong’s traffic woes

By IANS,

Shillong: The Meghalaya government Thursday said it planned to introduce cable cars in Shillong to ease the city’s traffic congestion.

“Cable cars can be a good option to ease this burgeoning traffic congestion. We will examine this option,” Chief Minister Mukul Sangma told IANS Thursday.

Traffic jams have become common in picturesque Shillong, the mountainous state capital of Meghalaya.

“We don’t want tourists visiting our state to get discouraged by traffic congestion,” he added.

On Wednesday, private firm Leading Edge Adventurers and Airparks Private Limited made a presentation before the government on the benefits of metro cable cars.

“Shillong, like any other towns in the northeast, is facing traffic congestion. We have suggested to the chief minister to explore cable cars as an alternative transport,” the firm’s managing director Satish Pathania said.

Pathania said the cable cars were eco-friendly and will help attract tourists.

“The government will examine the option put forward by Leading Edge Adventurers and if we are satisfied, we will ask them to submit a feasibility study before finalising the project,” Sangma said.
