Lucknow: Constituted after years of struggle, the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) issued notification on Monday declaring that AMU Students Union (AMUSU) will complete its term on Tuesday. Taken aback, the AMUSU summoned a general body meeting and opposed the notification of the university. “We reject this notification and will continue to function. It is simple piece of paper and we will not abide by this,” said Secretary, AMUS, Amir Qutub.

The AMUSU which was formally installed on January 27, 2011 will thus have a shortest tenure of four months and three days. The registrar of the AMU, Prof VK Abdul Jaleel confirmed the notification stating that AMUSU shall complete its term on Tuesday.

He stated that the notification has been issued in accordance with the clause 4 of the Regulations 2010 providing therein for the conduct of election of the President, Vice President, Honorary Secretary and ten members of the Students’ Union Executive. “It is clearly mentioned that the AMUSU shall be elected for one academic session. The present academic session ends on May 31 as per the earlier notification of the university whereby the summer vacations commence from Wednesday. So the tenure of AMUSU also ends on Tuesday,” said Prof Jaleel.

On the other hand, Secretary, AMUSU, Amir Qutub stated that registrar is not competent authority to issue such notification. He also stated that the union will continue till admission process is completed and next union is installed. The AMUSU was revived after students sat on hunger strike for several months. Later, it had several altercations with the university administration and is presently staging a dharna demanding action against the culprits of violence in campus on April 29 which led to sine die closure of the university.
