Hajj: 987 selected through draw of lots in Kerala

Malappuram: 987 applicants were today selected by the draw of lots for this year’s Hajj pilgrimage from Kerala. Industries Minister PK Kunjalikkutty, who is in charge of Hajj Affairs, inaugurated the draw of lots in the Hajj House near the International Airport at Karippur in Malappuram.

Rehearsal of the draw of lots was carried out yesterday. A waiting list has also been prepared including all the applicants who have not been selected in the draw of lots. Lots were drawn to select pilgrims for the state’s quota, excluding the reserved category of 5921 seats. Their names have already been published. Those applicants who were not selected in the last four consecutive years have been included in the reserved category list. The list also includes those above 70 years of age along with an aid.

Meanwhile, a charitable trust has decided to provide free accommodation facilities for 50 pilgrims from the state. The Hajj Committee will select the 50 beneficiaries of the facility.

The state Hajj Committee received a total of 41,442 applications for the Hajj pilgrimage this year. And among them, 6708 were selected. Most number of applications came from Kozhikode district – 11,902. Malappuram district is second with 10,034 applications.
