Nine killed in two road accidents in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad : Nine people were killed and 20 injured in two separate road accidents in Ghaziabad Sunday, police said.

The incidents took place in Hapur and Loni on National Highway-24 that connects Delhi to Uttar Pradesh.

Police said some pilgrims from Ballabgarh in Haryana were going to Garh Mukteswar for aaking a holy dip in the Ganga when the truck in which they were travelling rammed into a stationary one around 5.30 a.m. at village Anwarpur near Hapur town. Seven people were killed and 16 injured.

Those killed are Govind Ram, 65, Satish Sharma, 33, Raju, 18, Chandra Kant, 42, Adesh, 25, and two unidentified women.

In the other incident, two brothers, were crushed to death and their maternal uncle was injured when a speeding truck hit them near Laxmi Palace Cinema in Loni.

The incident occurred at 1 p.m. when the boys Shah Rukh, 15, and Akil, 12, along with their parents and uncle Aas Mohammad, 18, were walking towards a market.

The driver and cleaner of the brick-laden truck fled after the incident.

Angry local residents staged a sit-in on the Loni-Ghaziabad road, leading to a traffic jam for about two hours.

“In view of the Eid festival Monday, the situation became very delicate so a heavy police force was deployed. The situation is now under control,” said Superintendent of Police (City) J.K. Shahi.
