New Delhi : Following are some of the stampedes at religious places in India claiming many lives in over a decade:
Nov 8, 2011 – At least 16 people were killed and 40 injured in Haridwar in Uttarakhand when tens of thousands were gathered near the Ganges for a religious meet.
Jan 14, 2011 – Over 102 devotees were killed and 50 injured at Pulmedu near the famous Sabarimala hill-top shrine when they were there to watch the celestial Makarajyothi. Most died of severe internal injuries after being trampled over by a panicked crowd.
March 4, 2010 – Sixty three were killed and 15 injured during distribution of prasad at Kripaluji Maharaj ashram in Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh.
Jan 3, 2008 – Five people were killed in a stampede at Durga Malleswara temple in Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh.
July 3, 2008 – Six people were killed and 12 injured during the annual Jagannath rath yatra in Puri.
Sep 30, 2008 – About 250 devotees were killed and 60 injured when a rumour of bomb blast spread at the Chamunda Devi temple in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
Aug 3, 2008 – About 160 people were killed and 230 left injured at Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh when a railing collapsed due to heavy rush, resulting in a stampede.
March 27, 2008 – Eight devotees were crushed to death and 10 critically injured in a temple in Karila village in Madhya Pradesh.
Oct 14, 2007 – Eleven people were killed at Pawagah in Gujarat.
Nov 4, 2006 – Four elderly people were crushed in the crowd at a stampede in Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha.
Jan 26, 2005 – A short circuit and a narrow path that led to the Mandhar Devi Temple in Maharashtra led to a stampede, claiming 350 lives and leaving 200 injured as many people tripped over.
Aug 27, 2003 – Nearly 40 pilgrims were killed and 125 injured at Kumbh Mela in Nashik.
Jan 14, 1999 – Over 50 people were killed in a stampede near Sabarimala in Kerala. The devotees in a camp were panicked as a hillock collapsed.
