Singapore defence chief in India to expand ties

New Delhi : Opportunities for expanding defence cooperation will be discussed during Singaporean defence forces chief Lt. Gen. Neo Kian Hong’s three-day visit to India that began Tuesday. He will meet Defence Minister A.K. Antony and the armed forces chiefs.

Neo, who arrived in Mumbai, will reach the capital Wednesday when the meetings with the Indian defence officials will take place, defence ministry officials said here.

In Mumbai, the Singaporean defence chief visited the Indian Navy’s Western Naval Command and met senior officers Tuesday.

Once in Delhi, Neo will meet with Indian Navy chief, Admiral Nirmal Verma, who is also the chairman of the chiefs of staff committee; the Indian Army chief, General Vijay Kumar Singh and Indian Air Force chief, Air Chief Marshal Norman Anil Kumar Browne.

During these meetings, the two sides are expected to discuss regional and global security issues, terrorism threats and counter action, and scope for expanding the already robust bilateral military-to-military ties, including joint exercises.

Indian and Singaporean armed forces frequently hold army, navy and air force joint exercises, apart from warships visiting each other’s ports when they hold passage exercises.
