Greek leaders fail to agree on new PM

By IANS/RIA Novosti,

Athens : Talks between Greece’s political leaders on a new coalition government ended Wednesday without reaching an agreement on a new prime minister.

Outgoing prime minister George Papandreou, opposition leader Antonis Samaras and President Karolos Papoulias met in the presidential palace. The talks would continue Thursday morning.

Earlier Wednesday, Papandreou announced he would step down as prime minister to make way for a new coalition government to save the country from bankruptcy.

The coalition government would comprise Papandreou’s PASOK party and the opposition New Democracy party.

The new government is scheduled to hold parliamentary elections in February 2012.
