Metro worker killed in accident

By IANS,

Jaipur : A 37-year-old labourer was killed at a construction site of Jaipur Metro when he was run over by a dumper Friday, said police. It was the second fatality at a metro site.

According to the police, the mishap took place near Civil Lines where metro construction work is undergoing. The deceased, identified as Sukumar Varma, was a resident of West Bengal.

It was the second death at a metro site. Besides, several people have been injured in over a dozen accidents in the city. Earlier in February, a businessman was killed when a piling machine at a Jaipur Metro project site collapsed and fell on his car. The victim, Vikram Maheshwari (35), was the franchise owner of Talwalkars Gym in Jaipur.

“Sukumar was talking over mobile phone when a dumper being used at the metro site hit him and ran over him. He died on the spot,” a police officer told IANS.

He added that it is being investigated whether the mishap took place due to negligence on the part of the site supervisors.

The foundation stone for the over 9-km-long first phase of Jaipur Metro Rail project was laid Feb 24.

During the ceremony held in Mansarovar area of the city earlier this year, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) managing director E. Sreedharan said the first phase with 9.25 km of track will be complete by 2013.
