New Delhi : As many as 100 civil society groups from around the globe and 12 international organisations Sunday met in the Tanzanian capital to launch a global effort to make public budgets transparent, participatory and accountable, a statement said.

Indian activist Aruna Roy, involved with a campaign on the right to information, also addressed the global assembly of the groups, including the International Budget Partnership, Greenpeace and the ONE Campaign, at Dar es Salaam, the statement added.

The participants agreed upon shared values that included recognising public participation in budgeting as a fundamental right and a responsibility, social equity, inclusion, non-discrimination and mutual respect.

According to the statement, the global Civil Society Movement for Budget Transparency, Accountability and Participation envisions public finance systems that make all budget information easily accessible and include strong institutions to hold governments accountable for how they raise and spend public money.
