Top GNLA rebel arrested

By IANS,

Shillong : Security forces in Meghalaya have arrested a top leader of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), fighting for a separate state of Garoland, police said Thursday.

Jacques was nabbed Wednesday along with four other suspected rebel leaders, belonging to Manipur and Assam, from a city hotel, police said.

“A huge amount of cash and ammunition was recovered from the hotel,” a police official told IANS on condition of anonymity.

“Interrogation is on to find the exact identities of the other four persons,” he added.

The GNLA, which is headed by police officer-turned outlaw Champion R. Sangma, has unleashed a reign of terror in the three impoverished districts of Garo Hills in the western part of Meghalaya.

GNLA has forged an operational alliance with the Assam-based rebel groups – the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB).
