Islamabad : At least 12 gangs of robbers involved in bank heists in Pakistan’s port city Karachi have been identified, police said.
A study of police records of bank robberies in the last five years revealed that the gangs only targeted local banks and not foreign banks, the Daily Times reported Sunday.
Ghulam Bashir Sheikh, additional inspector general of Sindh province, said Saturday that evidence had been collected against all gangs and police would soon initiate action.
He said all the gangs had technical knowledge regarding the banks. In most cases, they knew where the digital video recording systems were placed and how the systems could be destroyed.
The Citizens-Police Liaison Committee says 20 bank heists were reported in the city in 2010 and 14 in 2009. Till November this year, there have been at least 15 robberies, the Dawn reported.
