10 mn Pakistan voters not on electoral roll

By IANS,

Islamabad : Over 10 million eligible voters in Pakistan are missing from the draft electoral rolls, a media report said Saturday.

The deficit between eligible and registered voters has risen due to lapses in the house listing operation conducted by the Population Census Organization, the news website Daily Times reported quoting a study by the NGO Free and Fair Election Network (Fafen).

Fafen monitored the effectiveness of the house count exercise as part of its national survey in July-August on democratic practices.

About 3,870 people over the age of 18 years were randomly selected at 387 sampled locations proportionate to population in 272 National Assembly constituencies of four provinces, Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and the capital territory.

Over seven percent of sampled households across Pakistan were found to be not marked, raising the possibility that the population residing in these houses may not be counted.

More than 82 percent of unmarked households were located in the rural areas, while about 17 percent in the urban areas.

The highest percentage of unmarked households in rural areas was found to be in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at 100 percent, followed by Sindh, 89.36 percent, Punjab, 86.99 percent and Balochistan, 55 percent.
