Salim stops Jayavel, snatches lead in chess tourney

Chennai : Local schoolboy Osama Salim (Velammal School) scored over leader Mugil Jayavel and led the table with 8.5 points after the ninth round in the United India Insurance-CDCA FIDE rated chess tournament here Saturday.

In a Catalan game, Osama gained the early upper-hand and had Mugil in middle game difficulties. By 30th move, Mugil found himself in an unenviable position and resigned.

Half-a-point behind the leader were Mugil Jayavel and Ramakrishna Perumalla at 8.0 points each. Sharing the fourth spot were Woman FIDE Master Srija Seshadri, M.L. Abhilash Reddy, Hegde Naveen, K. Sai Prahalad and L. Barath respectively.

Meanwhile, top seed FIDE Master Elijah Emojong of Uganda suffered his second defeat when he lost to Andhra’s Ramakrishna Perumalla in the second board.
