New Delhi: A high-level delegation of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind called upon Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh at his residence here on Saturday seeking his firm commitment on two important issues concerning the Muslim community in the country – reservation to Muslims and Communal Violence Bill.
Led by Maulana Qari Mohammad Usman, President of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, the delegation submitted a memorandum of demands on the two issues. The Jamiat leaders urged upon the Prime Minister to declare his firm commitment on these two issues as the UPA Govt. had been expressing time and again its commitment to deliver justice and fair equal opportunity to most backward and weakest sections of society.

Maulana Mahmood Madani, Rajya Sabha Member and General Secretary of Jamiat while recalling the serial communal riots in various parts of the country demanded immediate implementation of communal violence bill. Maulana Madani, who was also in the delegation, protested on taking no action against the culprits of Bharatpur riots especially Rajasthan state home minister Shanti Dhariwal and injustice meted out to victims of Rudarpur riots. He urged the PM to come forward for maintaining the communal harmony of the country.
According to Jamiat’s press statement, the prime minister acknowledged that there was no doubt that some sections of Indian society especially Muslims had been left behind and urgent steps were called for to provide to them fair and equal opportunity. He also agreed that the bill on communal violence must come. However, he denied giving any deadline to implement these assurances due to technical reasons.
The Jamiat will decide future course of action on the two issues in its national executive meet scheduled for this evening. He expressed his determination to fight until the demands are implemented. He hinted to resume national satyagraha which was suspended after the assurances from UPA govt last year.
During the meet with prime minister, Maulana Siddiqullah Chaudhry secretary Jamiat Ulama West Bengal and Maulana Hayatullah Qasmi, president Jamiat Ulama Uttar Pradesh also raised the minorities problems of their respective states.
