Srinagar : In the over two-decade-long violence in Jammu and Kashmir, it treated thousands of patients with psychiatric ailments like insomnia, melancholia, schizophrenia and hallucinations. The institute of mental health and neuro sciences in Srinagar has now been chosen as a “centre of excellence”.

It is a matter of pride that the Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience has been chosen as a centre of excellence by the government of India, state Minister for Medical Education R.S. Chib said in a statement here Saturday.

“This institute has played a vital role in bringing many people out of psychiatric problems. In the past 20 years of turmoil, our population has been exposed to a situation where many of our young people became vulnerable to many kinds of psychiatric disorders,” the minister said.

The institute is one among 11 such institutions in the country, Chib said during the concluding session of the fortnight long mental health care campaign organised by the institute.

“Everyone of us has to play a multiple role in the society to overcome the mounting stresses both on professional as well as personal fronts,” the minister said.

Emphasis was laid during the campaign to overcome the social stigma usually associated with psychiatric disorders.
