Digvijay attacks Anna, BJP, Mayawati at one go

By IANS,

Lucknow : Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh Sunday simultaneously trained his guns at Anna Hazare, the Bharatiya Janata Party and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati as he sought to pep up the morale of his partymen.

Accusing Hazare of “a secret RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh) nexus”, charging the BJP with “double-standards” and describing it as a “party with too many PMs (prime ministers)-in- waiting”, he termed Mayawati as “an epitome of corruption” at a press conference at the state Congress headquarters here.

Flaying Mayawati for the rampant corruption in the state, Digvijay Singh threatened to expose the bungling under her regime.

“We are preparing a charge-sheet against Mayawati and we will expose her misdeeds at a public rally in Lucknow around February.”

Criticising her for installing her own statues in Lucknow and in Noida, he said: “Mayawati has set a new convention of putting up statues of living persons and that too with government money, which is highly objectionable.”

“What is even worse that the tax-payer’s money was also used to erect statues of Mayawati’s family members too.”

He hastened to clarify that his party had nothing against installation of statues of Dalit icons, “but surely Mayawati is not entitled to be erecting her own statues or that of her kin at state expense”.

Digvijay Singh, who went on repeatedly citing the letter of support sent by a senior RSS leader to Hazare as “evidence” of the activist’s RSS connection, did not reply when asked him whether there was any proof of Anna accepting the alleged support.

However, while referring to the Lokpal bill, he gave a categorical assurance it would be passed during the coming winter session of parliament.

Raising questions against BJP leader L.K.Advani’s ‘yatra’ against corruption, Digvijay Singh sought to charge Advani of “gross double standards”.

“When BJP has people like Bangaru Laxman who were caught accepting bribe on camera and (former Karnataka chief minister B.S.) Yedyurrappa who had to eventually go to jail because of his corrupt activities, Advani’s anti-corruption yatra only reflects his double-standards.”

He said to top it all, the hollowness behind Advani’s anti-corruption campaign stood completely exposed when his own partymen were recently caught offering Rs.1,000 each to journalists who had gone to cover the Advani yatra in Satna (Madhya Pradesh).
