Kolkata : Team Anna member and former police officer Kiran Bedi Tuesday said they will meet Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi shortly to discuss his opposition to the right to reject or recall non-performing MPs.
“We will be meeting him shortly and in fact, he has also said that he is also looking forward to a meeting with Team Anna. I think he is open to reasoning and is looking forward to ideas,” said Bedi.
Quraishi Sunday said the right to reject or the right to recall non-performing MPs may not work in a large country like India.
Anna Hazare has said if all candidates spending crores in elections are rejected by the voters, it will discourage them from overspending and would control election expenditure.
When asked to react on Hisar Lok Sabha by-poll results, Bedi said: “Two things I have noticed. One is voter turnout was higher than the last time. That means awareness regarding corruption has increased. We had said during the campaigning that send a person to parliament who will vote for Jan Lokpal bill in parliament.”
“The results have also shown that people are desperate for an anti-corruption bill and see the country corruption free,” she said.
When asked about Congress’s strategy to open a new front in Uttar Pradesh with Rahul Gandhi before the assembly polls, Bedi said: “Congress party doesn’t need a new front. What they need is to pass Jan Lokpal Bill which the people of this country want desperately.”
Bedi also added members of Team Anna will campaign in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections next year.
“We will make the masses aware so that there can be no relief without Jan Lokpal bill, and it will in turn help the state itself,” said Bedi.
