Bhattarai calls for ‘people’s SAARC’

By IANS,

New Delhi : Nepal Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai Thursday called for a “people’s SAARC” to unite the people of South Asia.

“We want to create a real federation of South Asia,” Bhattarai told a meeting held in his honour here. He said his Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist had proposed this idea almost 10 years ago.

“However, in the process some people in Nepal branded us pro-India while surprisingly some in India called us anti-India,” Bhattarai, who landed here Thursday, said.

He said it is only when the people of South Asia come together that governments in the region will stop needless military spending.

Bhattarai will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday to discuss a wide array of issues ranging from economic and energy ties to security cooperation and infrastructure projects.
