Gadkari to meet PM on Manipur blockade

By IANS,

New Delhi : Led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari, a team of party leaders from Manipur will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday over the economic blockade in the state, sources said.

BJP’s Manipur unit president Santikumar Sharma too will attend the meeting.

According to party sources, the party will demand a special subsidy of Rs.30,000 per month for every household of the state as compensation of the losses incurred during the economic blockade and counter blockade.

Thursday was the 88th day of the blockade.

The Sadar Hills District Demand Committee (SHDDC) began an indefinite road blockade on the two crucial national highways that link the northeastern state with the rest of the country.

They are demanding that the Sadar Hills sub-division in the Naga-dominated Senapati district in northern Manipur be upgraded as a full-fledged district.

The United Naga Council (UNC), the apex forum of Nagas in Manipur, has also been organising a counter-road blockade in all Naga-inhabited areas in northern Manipur, demanding that these areas should not be carved out without their consent.
