New Delhi : The Congress Friday refused to comment on the letter by party candidate from Hisar Jai Prakash to party president Sonia Gandhi blaming union minister Selja and Congress general secretary Birender Singh for his defeat in the Lok Sabha bypolls.
Congress general secretary B.K. Hariprasad said that every party member has a right to write a letter to president Sonia Gandhi, but contents of communication should not be discussed publicly.
“It cannot be discussed in the media,” Hariprasad told IANS.
Hariprasad, Congress in-charge of Haryana, however, said he did not get a copy of Jai Prakash’s letter.
In his letter, Jai Prakash complained that his detractors within the party had worked towards his defeat.
The Congress nominee said he had got far less votes compared to Kuldeep Bishnoi in the native places of Selja and Birender Singh.
Bishnoi of the Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) combine won the by-election, defeating his nearest rival Ajay Singh Chautala of the Indian National Lok Dal by over 6,300 votes.
Jai Prakash finished a poor third and lost his security deposit. He polled only 149,784 votes compared to 355,941 votes of Bishnoi and 349,618 of Chautala.
The Hisar by-election had also gained prominence because Anna Hazare and his team had campaigned against the Congress.
