Lucknow: In a significant development, the Central Council for Indian Medicine (CCIM) on Saturday derecognised the state-owned Takmil-Uttib Unani Medical College, Lucknow for acute shortage of teaching staff. The college which runs undergraduate BUMS course has only 25 teachers against the required number of 90. The CCIM is the apex governing body granting recognition to unani medical colleges for running unani medical courses.
As per reports, the decision was taken after an inspection report by CCIM at the Takmil-Uttib Unani Medical College. The college has 40 seats for undergraduate BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery) course, admission for which are taken through prestigious Combined Pre Medical Test (CPMT) organised by the state government.
The CCIM has cited acute shortage of teaching staff at the college for derecognition of the college. As per inspection report there should be one professor, one reader, one senior lecturer and two senior lecturers in every department. There are 14 departments in the college which implies 90 teachers. However, there are only 25 teachers in the college. The admittance of patient is also very poor with hardly any patient being treated in Indoor Patient Department (IPD).
This is the final report of the CCIM and any decision regarding restoration of the recognition will be taken next year. “The future of 40 students admitted this year is likely to be affected due to the decision,” said a teacher at the college. However, Director, Unani Medicine, Shoib Kazmi looked hopeful and stated that a representation will be made before the AYUSH Department which governs CCIM. “We are hopeful of restoration of the recognition as we have acquired new building, new hospital facilities and are in the process of appointment,” he said.
As per CCIM, only the college at Deoband in private sector and one at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) are recognised to run the BUMS course. Meanwhile several private medical colleges which are also running BUMS but have been denied recognition are planning to approach court for legal battle.
