Bhubaneswar : The Indian Coast Guard Saturday detained a Bangladeshi vessel with 16 people on board after they fired at local marine police in Bay of Bengal in Orissa, an official said.
Area fishermen first spotted the vessel off Balasore coast and informed marine police, Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar told IANS.
When a police party tried to intercept the vessel its crew fired at them and attempted to sail towards Bangladesh.
The Coast Guard stepped in and managed to intercept the vessel near Haldia in West Bengal. The vessel and the crew members have been brought to the coast guard base at Paradip in coastal Jagatsinghpur district, Kumar said.
