New Delhi : Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh Friday advocated bail for Suresh Kalmadi, jailed former chief of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, while the party appeared to distance himself from his opinion.
“It is the right of a person to get a bail after the investigation is complete and chargesheet has been submitted. I think judiciary should take that into consideration,” Digvijay Singh said.
“This is not correct. I pray that he (Kalmadi) can prove himself innocent,” he said.
But union Law Minister Salman Khurshid said: “Digvijay Singh is a very senior leader of our party but he is not a member of the government.”
“Government has to be very careful about the position it takes. It cannot be an individual, it has to be a collective decision of the government. We can consult with prime minister and minister concerned and then speak,” he said.
