Reliance Power to buy equipment from First Solar

New Delhi : US-based First Solar, the world’s largest solar power firm, said Wednesday it will supply 100 MW of solar modules to Reliance Power, a part of the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group.

First Solar will supply 40 megawatts of advanced thin film modules by the end of this year for to Reliance Power’s project in Jaisalmer. The project will supply electricity to Mumbai, a company statement said.

The delivery of the remaining 60 megawatts is expected in 2012. This is the largest photovoltaic module supply agreement in India so far.

“With strong growth projections, India is expected to become one of the world’s major solar markets, due to its abundant solar resource and significant energy demand,” Jim Brown, president of First Solar’s Utility Systems Business Group, said in a statement.

The US Export-Import Bank approved a $84.3 million direct loan Aug 25 to Reliance Power’s Dahanu Solar Power unit to purchase First Solar panels for the first 40MW of the project.
