Islamabad : A container carrying electronic goods worth Rs.20 million was seized in Pakistan after it was discovered that it was wrongly manifested to be carrying foodstuff for the embassy of an African country.
The 40-foot long container was cleared at Karachi through documents relating to the African country’s embassy to evade duty and taxes, Dawn reported.
Authorities found that the container actually carried electronic appliances and other goods. It was unloaded at a godown in Karachi, instead of heading to the embassy in Islamabad.
Three people have been arrested.
The import of several items for embassies is largely exempt from duties and taxes, but this facility is often misused, Dawn said.
