New Delhi : German Ambassador Thomas Matussek Tuesday unveiled a two-metre Buddy Bear sculpture in front of the embassy here as part of the over-year long celebrations to mark 60 years of diplomatic relations with India.
Named as the Delhi Buddy Bear, the sculpture “is a symbol of cultural exchange and will welcome all visitors to the embassy”, Matussek told reporters after the unveiling ceremony.
This also marks the beginning of the Year of Germany in India – a 15-month long series of programmes – under the motto “Infinite Opportunities – Germany and India 2011-2012”.
The series will be formally inaugurated Sep 23 evening with a live concert in Nehru Place, and similar events will be organised across India.
At the concert, “Infinite Rhythms”, Indian percussionist Sivamani will perform live with German artist Christoph Haberer, also a drummer.
The Year of Germany in India is directed “primarily at the urban, educated and creative youth of India”, said the envoy.
“Germany aims to present itself as an innovative, creative partner for India in resolving the challenges of the future,” he said.
The series of events encompasses all facets of urban development-mobility, migration, water, energy, sustainable development, architecture, engineering, education, cultural infrastructure and social issues, he said.
The event will also showcase “the entire spectrum of Indo-German collaboration in the fields of politics, business, culture, science and research”, he added.
Matussek said the launching the Buddy Bear, which has been Berlin’s emblem for centuries, in Delhi was a symbolic step forward in that direction.
“The Buddy Bear communicates friendship, optimism and a positive atmosphere,” he said.
The one in Delhi has been designed by Annie Kumari, a student at the Delhi College of Art.
Standing just near the embassy gate, the sculpture has been painted with attractive Indian motifs with a drawing of Taj Mahal on its tummy.
Events will also take place other Indian cities — Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune and Hyderabad in the next 15 months.
