Chennai: City-based engineering-procurement-construction (EPC) contractor BGR Energy Systems Ltd will supply the steam turbine and generator units to National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Ltd through a mix of locally-manufactured items as well as imports.
“We are in the process of acquiring the land to house the steam turbine and generator plant in Tamil Nadu. The plant construction is expected to take around 20 months. We have to fulfill our order to NTPC in 42-48 months,” a company official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told IANS.
BGR Energy has a 74:26 joint venture called BGR Turbines Company with Japan’s Hitachi to design, manufacture, install and commission supercritical steam turbines and generators for coal-fired power plants.
BGR Energy Thursday announced that it is the lowest bidder in state-run NTPC Ltd’s bulk tender for supplying steam turbine and generator units.
“The company has emerged as the lowest bidder in the tender called for by NTPC Ltd for supply of nine units of 800 MW steam turbine and generator units,” BGR Energy said in a regulatory filing with the stock exchanges.
According to the company, NTPC would award the contract for supply of five steam turbine and generator units for a value of about Rs.3,500 crore.
BGR Energy official said the company would source the equipment from BGR Turbine and others and supply them to NTPC.
Announcing the joint venture with Hitachi last August, BGR Energy said the steam turbine and generator plant will go on stream 2012.
The proposed plant will have a capacity to make five units per annum of 660 MW, 800 MW and 1000 MW, the company then said.
BGR Energy officials told IANS last year that if there is a need to supply the equipment before the commissioning of the plant, then the demand would be catered to from Hitachi’s plants.
The turbine and generator project would need around 250 acre for the plant and housing for employees.
