Don’t read too much into support for Modi, says Jayalalithaa

Chennai: Describing her support to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s fast as an “expression of goodwill”, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Saturday said there was no change in political dynamics and one should not read too much into it.

“He (Modi) spoke to me on telephone and asked me to send someone to felicitate his fast. So, I have sent two members of parliament, V. Maitreyan and M. Thambidurai,” Jayalalithaa told news channel reporters here.

Modi announced the launch of a ‘Sadbhavana mission’ to strengthen social harmony by sitting on a fast for three days. He had attended the swearing-in ceremony of Jayalalithaa as chief minister in May.

“Narendra Modi is fasting for communal harmony, peace and unity. This is also in line with our policy of maintaining communal harmony and peace,” she added.

Jayalalithaa, however, said that nothing much should be read into the gesture. “This does not mean there is change in political dynamics. It’s just an expression of goodwill,” she said.
